Packing Smart (and Light)

Packing Smart (and Light)

People ask what products and services I like when traveling. So on the topic of travel must haves (or at least wants), here’s a couple of suitcase savers that have proven useful.  If it doesn’t make traveling easier or quicker, it isn’t worth packing.  Both of these fit the bill.

Brookstone Universal Travel Outlet -Over the years I’ve accumulated more and more electronics I seem to absolutely need on trips, and more outlets to charge them. I started traveling with a power strip in addition to the adapters and converter.  Navigating airport security with that many plugs and wires sticking out of my bag cost me thirty minutes of my life in Heathrow I’ll never get back.  I’ve replaced them all with one gadget.  Brookstone’s 4-in-1adapter is a little larger than a stick of butter, and can be used in over 150 countries.  The front has 2 side-by-side universal outlets and 2 usb outlets to handle up to 4 devices simultaneously.  The back has 3 different sets of fold out prongs, which eliminates the need for adapter plugs.  And the best part?  There are no pieces to lose!  Costs $49.99 at Brookstone.

Luggage compression packing inserts - Luggage inserts are packing systems that help you fit more into smaller spaces.  There are different companies that produce them, such as eBags and Flight 001, and are designed to fit together inside the standard carry-on bag, streamlining packing.  Besides organizing you, they are great if the TSA decides to check your luggage bc everything is self-contained (they won’t hold up your underwear for all to see).  The set that I use is Flight 001 F1 Spacepack system, which happens to be the one that my husband gave me as a gift.  Flight 001 claims that you can fit 2 weeks of clothes in a carry-on bag, saving you baggage fees and cutting out crowded baggage claims.  Spacepack inserts have a clean and dirty side which is great when unpacking.

My personal favorite insert is the toiletry bag.   Not only does it have zipper-tight mesh pockets to securely hold everything, but also hangs up in your hotel bathroom by an attached hook and unfolds giving you access to whatever you want while leaving the rest in tact.  These systems are ideal for people taking longer trips checking with one bag.  They are also great for people who want to travel light and hate multiple bags (my husband travels exclusively with a carry-on only).
